Always great to hear a little more about the roleplay and facets beyond combat. I hesitated at first because of the competitive structure of the game, but it's reassuring that there's depth to it. This is why I love blue camp, we didn’t really care about the war game last year. We got dragged out whenever shadow was sieged, but otherwise I think the only other time we can out in force was sieging silver which was only cause shadow asked us to. I mean we elected a frog as our war master cause winning through the war game isn’t super important to us.

    I really love your videos Raquel! So organized and well descriptive about LARPing. I do have a question about Drachenfest if you don’t mind me asking: Are minors such as 16 years old are allowed? I have never LARPed, but I enjoy Dungeons and Dragons. I play it nearly every weekend with a group of friends and daily in a text-based D&D campaign. Staying in-character is hard because I have trouble generating, maintaining, and recalling the memories, motivations, and mindsets of the characters before and during events. Embarrassment, doubt, and uncertainty tend to blossom when interacting with strangers (i.e. people whom I've never played with). Drop-in games helped me to overcome this to some extent, but I still prefer interacting with people with whom I am familiar.

    • @Kargoneth
      @Kargoneth 2 місяці тому

      My characters tend to live in-the-moment, because I tend to live in-the-moment. ADD. OCD. Introversion. Overthinking and overanalysis. My characters usually just end up being highly-exaggerated and distorted versions of me because it's less of a cognitive load, but even then it's still hard to stay in character.

    • @Kargoneth
      @Kargoneth 2 місяці тому

      I think that I would find LARP to be overwhelming. I took drama class in school and university. It blew me away how skilled some people are at acting. Very convincing. Stirred real emotions in me.

      It might be different to stay in-character for extended periods of time. Perhaps I should try that during D&D. It's hard because of the constant jumping into and out of character.

    Great video and this had a lot of topics I've never heard discuss. The silhouette and using the TV Tropes is amazing advice I've never heard before. I also like the sources you add in the description. The only critique I would give is you should have brought up more on the function of your character within the setting of the larp. If you're playing a American Freestyle / boffer larp with a lot of combat you will want garb that you can move around in a lot and is not going to be damage very easily. If you're playing a game outdoors in Arizona you may not want to wear a black gambeson and be in full plate armor. If you're playing in Canadian winter you might not want to dress like Conan or Red Sonja. Obviously this is less so in more emergent larps but its still a factor.

    • @RaquelSkellington
      @RaquelSkellington 2 місяці тому

      Thank you so much! So this was supposed to be very broad that would work with multiple styles of larp and touch on the core of character creation. I assumed people would dress accordingly for the climate in their area. But this is a good point that I can bring up in later videos! Especially with heat a lot of people don't realize the effects of polyester on the body! Thank you!

    Hi! Thank you so much for sitting down and making this video. Thanks for being honest about your experiences, for being vulnerable and for not being afraid to share. I am incredibly happy to have discovered your channel. I was looking for VtM LARP content and I found your videos about The Night in Question. I was overjoyed to see a woman like you share something she's passionate about and something I'm really interested in trying someday :) I'm a Black woman born and raised (and still living) in France. My parents are both from a sub Saharian country. I've always been into storytelling and I've been playing TTRPGs with a really cool association in my hometown. There, I always feel accepted , included and safe. I'm pretty used to being the only person of color in most of the spaces I frequent and I'm lucky enough to not experience much racism. I have siblings who have mixed children and I cannot imagine what life is like for them. This video reminded me of that. How when you're multi racial, multi cultural, sometimes you feel like you don't really belong... I'm really sorry you experienced racism from both white and non white people! I wish everyone would just get along and enjoy life and share cool experiences, damn it! Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you once again for using your voice, for sharing your passion and for being as visible as you are. Your voice matters! You matter! Never let anyone make you think otherwise!

    Ooo oo oo a thought as you were discussing archetypes to maybe avoid, I think this would be fun for a more seasoned LARPer, but character is _technically_ lone wolf (that lovely backstory no one cares about) but now as of actually LARPing is finally looking to have found family. How does "lone wolf" inform early decisions and how do you play into the fact you don't want to be that anymore at the right pace? Note: I have never LARPed, so like if I finally got to, this would be sooooooooooooo down the line for even me if I ever wanted to poke a little at that archetype. Like I have a lot (is 20ish a lot??) of OCs that I think playing as them would help me so much in working on them, but also like how many of those beloved idiots are just wish fulfillment for me but in a different way. Anyways again above is just thought cuz one thing that stays true is my love of found family hnggg

    • @RaquelSkellington
      @RaquelSkellington 2 місяці тому

      I mean that can definitely work but it's a pretty difficult thing to play going into a game blind (not knowing anyone in the community) and requires a lot of self-awareness and skill. It would definitely be a "slow burn" character for sure 🤔

    Amazing! Iv been larping for about 4 years now and have now started to bring friends along. What I like to tell them is to not be afraid of being a "level 1" character. I think when new folks look up these events it can make them feel like everyone has it figured out (costume/character/motivation) and it can feel like a lot of pressure. I think starting simple with a look, an archetype, or attitude and remind them that if it feels good to play that character, that character will "level up!" It makes that learning process feel fun and kinda part of the game!

    • @RaquelSkellington

    Gods! I fell into the wish-fulfillment character trap immediately when I first played LARP in solo quickly after getting initiated to it. I remember meeting another player who played the same archetype as me-but better in every way. I tried to have fun eitherway but that was rather short-lived and I quickly retired the character afterwards. Lesson learned!

    • @RaquelSkellington
      @RaquelSkellington 2 місяці тому

      It's in my opinion the most common new LARPer pit fall. Because it sounds SO FUN but it's a trap! It actually takes a surprising amount of skill to play your wish fulfillment in larp and not be insufferable or getting lost in the sauce!

    [ahem] DEXTER ONLY HAD 11 HEALTH!?!?! I always felt ashamed playing Princess Pixie that all the other DR players had these Elder Gods running around with dozens of health points; and I, who only made it to like 10 events since 2015 had all the fighting durability of a wet paper bag!! I love all of the things you say here, and now I want to start my own UA-cam channel about LARP and gaming!! I would love to piggyback on your idea of "Character Concept", vs. "Character Stats". (i.e. The way that you can make a character who is one thing on paper, but play them differently than the stereotypical concept of that character") But that would be a whole different video! :) I really need to get back to LARP one of these days. Adulting is such a burden on my free time!! :) See ya around! --- Craig

    Well, you ended strong on an uwu, so I have to say *something*: 1. The character silhouette point was a huge eye-opener-thank you! We often realize subconsciously when stuff fits us well, but choosing pieces with that in mind is something really useful for a LARPer's toolbox (and I hadn't even considered intentional padding until you said it). 2. Loved the point about skill progression fitting the character. I started at mechanically-dense LARPs written by guys a bit older than me, but who grew up on similar media - especially analog/digital fantasy RPGs and late-90s/early-2000s shonen. Cultivating skills, student/mentor relationships, and generally getting stronger to help the people you love were very common story beats. I think that gave us a very liberal interpretation of "does this skill make sense to take?" But like, even in the game where I was the most ready to shovel skills onto my sheet, I deliberately skipped certain things (e.g. demonology, poison use, anything that let me dodge attacks from behind) because I didn't want to make the character seem too seedy or hyper-competent. It's fun to think about!

    Thanks for all of the excellent advice! Most of what you've said could apply to making a character in tabletop roleplay or writing a fictional character. Regarding "wish fulfillment," I think it's possible to RP that one character you've wanted to play since 6th grade while also making them as flexible as possible for interacting productively with others. So, you can be a 16th-century European Sasuke-type person if you can find a Naruto-type character to bounce off of and have engaging roleplay. Really play up the tsundere energy if that helps.

      I do agree with this actually! It's more of a skill thing in earnest, I wouldn't recommend someone's first character to be their wish fulfillment. It takes experience to understand that's the kind of character you need to bounce off of etc, and it takes a level of self-awareness in/out of character that I think one has to practice with their skill in LARP over time.

    what advice do you have for players who are hard introverts? definitely asking for a friend 👀👉👈

    • @RaquelSkellington

      I promise you in the 12 years I've been doing this I have heard this question probably at this point thousands of times- it's extremely common for introverted people to have worries about getting into larp. Spoiler: Most LARPers are introverts! Just jump in! Approach everything at your own comfort level and try to remember we're ALL being very silly dressing up and playing pretend. 💕

      Working it into your character can be an option too. They can be quiet and introverted and there's nothing wrong with engaging only whence you're comfortable with people. I'm lucky to have a friend to bounce off of(we often play connected characters where he is the talker and I am the quiet one.), though I've also been trying to be more confident on my own. What can help me sometimes is having preplanned stuff(insofar as being like, we meet here and we try to make this happen). Improvization will come with practice as well. Find something about the larp you wanna deep dive in and be confident about can help get past some of the introvertedness. Definitely though the big thing is taking breaks when I get overwhelmed to calm down and recenter.

      Introvert here! i went with a friend (and still do). I had a quiet character when i first larped that opened up as i felt more comfortable with the players around me. eventually i made a new character that didnt have that anymore once i was comfortable with the larp system and community.

      Also an introvert here. Going with a friend is really good but I understand its not always possible. You should realize that this is an uber nerdy hobby and they really don't care how socially awkward you are. They generally expect it and will try to be as accommodating as possible. If not there are tons of others to try out.

    I’m new to LARPing (haven’t gone to any events yet) and watch your content a lot ever since I was introduced to LARPing. Though, I do have a one question that I have wanted to ask: is it possible to create your own race in LARP if it’s allowed?

    • @RaquelSkellington
      @RaquelSkellington 2 місяці тому

      Hello!! I'm so glad to hear that, I hope to be a helpful resource 🤩🙌🏾 On your question- if the LARP allows it I don't see why not! You can always contact staff and have them check it over if you're worried about the concept! Fun fact Alicia is canonically half elf but when I made her in the LARP she was originally from they didn't allow for "race mixing" (weird way to put it but true) so I asked the staff if I made her human under their rules/mechanics if I could have white hair and human ears- they said yes!! ...and here we are 12 years later!! I think as long as your character's "race" remains in the spirit of the game and isn't world breaking, they would probably say yes!

    I think it's awesome that you want to be a "shit" bard, that will be so hilarious and definitely fun to play. I feel like someone who was really good at musical instruments might struggle to intentionally sound bad and pull it off. Great idea and i look forward to seeing your future videos about this new LARP.

    I can see myself as a hero or villain. The challenge is consistency of portrayal.

  • @Kargoneth
    @Kargoneth 4 місяці тому

    You are too bubbly to be a villain, unless it was an unintentional villain, like Mr. Bean, wherein your attempts to be good and heroic results in unintentionally-calamitous and far-reaching misfortune for most other people, but very rarely seem to affect you. Not something easily achieved in LARP.
